National Pig Day

Pigs are incredibly intelligent animals and they're absolutely adorable! Today is National Pig Day and in an effort to encourage my readers to see these sweet animals for the amazing animals they are, I wanted to share some information (and cute pics and a video or two) with you guys.

Here's a list of fascinating facts about pigs that I found on Peta2:

1. Pigs snuggle close to one another and prefer to sleep nose to nose. They dream, much as humans do. In their natural surroundings, pigs spend hours playing, sunbathing, and exploring. People who run animal sanctuaries for farmed animals often report that pigs, like humans, enjoy listening to music, playing with soccer balls, and getting massages.
2. Pigs communicate constantly with one another; more than 20 vocalizations have been identified that pigs use in different situations, from wooing mates to saying, "I'm hungry!"
3. Newborn piglets learn to run to their mothers' voices and to recognize their own names. Mother pigs sing to their young while nursing.
4. According to Professor Donald Broom of the Cambridge University Veterinary School, "[Pigs] have the cognitive ability to be quite sophisticated. Even more so than dogs and certainly [more so than human] 3-year-olds."
5. Pigs appear to have a good sense of direction and have found their way home over great distances. Adult pigs can run at speeds of up to 11 miles an hour.

6. Professor Stanley Curtis of Penn State University has found that pigs can play joystick-controlled video games and are "capable of abstract representation." Dr. Curtis believes that "there is much more going on in terms of thinking and observing by these pigs than we would ever have guessed."
7. Pigs do not "eat like pigs" or "pig out." They prefer to eat slowly and savor their food.
8. Suzanne Held, who studies the cognitive abilities of farmed animals at the University of Bristol's Centre of Behavioural Biology, says that pigs are "really good at remembering where food is located, because in their natural environment food is patchily distributed and it pays to revisit profitable food patches."
9. Pigs are clean animals. If given sufficient space, they will be careful not to soil the area where they sleep or eat. Pigs don't "sweat like pigs"; they are actually unable to sweat. They like to bathe in water or mud to keep cool, and they actually prefer water to mud. One woman developed a shower for her pigs, and they learned to turn it on and off by themselves.
10. In his book The Whole Hog, biologist and Johannesburg Zoo director Lyall Watson writes, "I know of no other animals [who] are more consistently curious, more willing to explore new experiences, more ready to meet the world with open mouthed enthusiasm. Pigs, I have discovered, are incurable optimists and get a big kick out of just being."

Blended Beauty Review

Always on the lookout for biracial hair products, I came across Blended Beauty and was anxious to try them out. I was given the opportunity to try the Blended Cutie Soft Curls & Swirls Leave-in Conditioner and the Blended  Cutie Curly Cake Shake Detangler

Blended Beauty products are between 98-99% natural, which is an important factor to consider when looking for hair products.

Soft Curls & Swirls Leave-in Conditioner:

From the website: A light and gentle leave-in Moisturizer and conditioner for waves, curls, swirls and kinks. pH balanced for tender scalps, and tames that main! This daily conditioning cream is enriched with shea butter, aloe and chamomile, and leaves hair soft, smooth and in control.

My opinion: This is one of the lightest leave-in conditioners that we've used. It leaves my daughter's hair soft and smooth and tames any frizzies. The smell is wonderful too!

You can purchase an 8 ounce tub for $19.00 on their website.

Curly Cake Shake Detangler Spray Lotion:

From their website: Treat those curls and give them a shake! Curly Cake Shake will revive dry and lifeless curls and hydrate while boosting shine, with Rice Bran oil. Perfect for detangling damp curls or for a boost in the morning or anytime of the day, on dry or damp hair. You can never spoil those curls too much!

My opinion: I like that it doesn't take much for my daughter's hair and it detangles very nicely. I love that it's comb-able when it's dry, and doesn't leave her hair feeling stiff.

You can purchase an 8 ounce spray bottle for $19.00 on their website.

I definitely will be trying out their other products, such as their Silky Swirls Shampoo and their Tug Me Not Conditioner. They also have Curly Gift Sets which would be a great gift to go with cute hair accessories for the upcoming holidays.

What's New?

I've got a few updates to share with you all.
  • Basketball is ending (we've got 2 more games). This has been a great season and I've enjoyed coaching the boys.
  • Spring soccer season started this past Tuesday. Back with Coach Patrick and the Hammerheads! Yay!
  • I signed Desmond up for T-Ball. This is a new territory for us, but we're excited!
  • My sweet hubs got me a laptop for Valentine's Day, so I can blog from anywhere and everywhere... Yes, my goal is to get back in my blogging groove.
  • My furbaby, Bella, got fixed on Valentine's Day. So we're nursing her back to health. She is taking it like a champ though. She's cooperative, and has been so much easier to deal with than Coco was.
  • We've planned our Spring Break vacation. We're going to Florida to visit the in-laws in a month! I can't wait!
  • I've decided that I'm going to learn American Sign Language. I've wanted to do it for a long time, and it's now or never!
Things have been so hectic, but I will (slowly) be spending a bit more time here. Hope you all have a great weekend!

Happy 4th Birthday, Brooklynn!

Brooklynn, then and now.
My baby girl turned four today. It's hard to believe that she's so big now. She's so independent, and wants to do everything by herself. She is so smart and sweet and kind and I'm so very proud to be her mom. She's still a drama queen and wants to be a princess  is still my princess.

She's doing well in school, and loves her teachers and all of her friends. She's excelling in dance, and as soon as I find a gymnastics class that will teach her tumbling at four, she will be joining that as well. She also wants to play soccer like her brother, so in fall we'll explore that too.

She's an absolute joy in this melancholy world we live in. She makes me smile, laugh and so happy. I'm the luckiest mom in the world to have such a sweet girl in my life.

Happy birthday, Brooklynn!

Brooklynn's First Dance Program

Brooklynn had her first dance program and she did well. (She had a little stage fright in the beginning and just looked around a bit at first, but got over it.)

The photos I took didn't turn out as well as I wanted, so I decided to share Brooklynn's favorite photo with you all. This is her and her instructor, Ms. Nancy. She's learned a lot in class and absolutely adores Ms. Nancy.

This dance studio only does recitals every other year, so the next recital will be next year. (Recital, as in costumes). They'll have another dance program in May.
